Every reputable peptide ships with a Certificate of Analysis. Here's how to actually read one — purity, identity, residual solvents, and the four lines that matter most.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the document that separates a serious peptide supplier from a marketing operation. Knowing how to read one is one of the highest-leverage skills a research buyer can develop.

1. Identity confirmation

The COA should name the peptide, list its molecular formula and mass, and report a mass-spec result confirming that what's in the vial matches the labeled identity. If identity is missing, nothing else on the page is meaningful.

2. Purity by HPLC

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) purity is the headline number. Reputable suppliers target ≥98%. A COA that lists purity without naming the method — or worse, lists no number at all — is not a COA in any technical sense.

3. Residual solvents and water content

Synthetic peptides can carry residual TFA, acetonitrile, or water. A complete COA reports these and confirms they are within accepted research-grade thresholds.

4. Lot number, date, and testing lab

Every COA must tie back to a specific lot, a specific manufacture date, and a named third-party testing laboratory. This is the traceability chain — without it, the document is decorative.
