Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is the default diluent for peptide reconstitution in research. The difference between BAC water and plain sterile water is one ingredient and one major implication: shelf life.

What makes it 'bacteriostatic'

BAC water contains roughly 0.9% benzyl alcohol — a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth without killing existing organisms. That preservative is what allows a reconstituted vial to be drawn from multiple times over weeks rather than discarded after a single use.

When sterile water is the right call

Sterile water has no preservative. It's appropriate only for single-use reconstitution, or in protocols where benzyl alcohol must be avoided (rare but documented in some clinical contexts).

Storage

Keep BAC water at room temperature unopened; refrigerate once opened. A standard 30 mL vial typically remains usable for 28 days after the first draw under sterile technique.
